You're staring at a product listing for a new phone or laptop, and the spec sheet reads like an alphabet soup: RAM, SSD, NFC, OLED. These aren't marketing buzzwords — each one describes something real and specific about how a device works and performs. Once you understand what they mean, those specs become genuinely useful shopping and troubleshooting tools.

- HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is an older storage technology using spinning magnetic platters. HDDs are cheaper per gigabyte but slower and more fragile than SSDs.

RAM
Random Access Memory — your device's short-term working memory. It holds data for apps currently in use, and more RAM generally means smoother multitasking.
SSD
Solid-State Drive — a type of fast, durable permanent storage with no moving parts. Used in most modern laptops and phones to store files, apps, and the operating system.
OLED
Organic Light-Emitting Diode — a display technology where each pixel produces its own light. This allows for true blacks, vivid colors, and high contrast ratios.
NFC

HDR

Refresh Rate

USB-C
A reversible connector standard used for charging and data transfer across many modern devices. The port shape is standardized, but speed and power capabilities vary by device.
Bluetooth
A short-range wireless standard for connecting accessories and devices without cables. Each newer version typically improves speed, range, or battery efficiency.
Display Terms: OLED, LCD, HDR, and Refresh Rate
Screen quality is described by a cluster of terms that sound technical but map to things you can actually see.
- LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens use a backlight shining through liquid crystals to produce images. They are common, affordable, and reliable.
- OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screens light each pixel individually, so pixels that show black can switch off entirely. This produces deeper blacks and higher contrast than LCD.
